Energy savings and optimal shading in Aguascalientes: How the dual use of the screen Harmony 2845 boosts tomato production at JD Agro

In Aguascalientes, Mexico, growers face a climate with cold winters that require heating and summers with high radiation and temperatures reaching up to 35 °C. In this context, JD Agro, a company founded in 2022, produces TOV tomatoes for export to the United States and Canada.

Productor: Felipe Palomares
Compañía: JD Agro
Area:
10 hectares
Crop: TOV tomato for export (U.S. and Canada)
Location: Aguascalientes, Mexico
Climate conditions: Average annual temperature of 22°C, cold winters with lows of 4–6°C, and hot summers with high radiation reaching up to 35°C
Climate challenge: High gas consumption in winter and the need for shading in summer without losing light
Solution: Harmony 2845 (dual use: energy + shading)

From the beginning, JD Agro established a clear objective, to produce efficiently and in a sustainable way. To achieve this, Felipe Palomares, Grower at JD Agro, decided to innovate by installing the Climate Screen Harmony 2845 to reduce energy costs in winter and eliminate the use of shading paint in summer.

"My main challenge was saving gas. We were spending a lot during the winter season, and when they presented the dual use of the screen Harmony 2845 to me, I took the leap... and I wasn’t wrong." — Felipe Palomares, Grower, JD Agro

From the start, Felipe was supported by Héctor Parra, Climate Consultant at Svensson, who guided him through the decision-making, installation, and screen management strategy, ensuring optimal use and maximum performance.

It is also worth mentioning that Felipe is the first grower in Mexico to use the screen Harmony 2845 in a dual way, as an energy-saving solution in winter and as a shading screen in summer.

Visible results with the screen Harmony 2845

After two crop cycles using the screen, the winter 2024–2025 and summer 2025 seasons, the benefits of Harmony 2845 are clear:

  • 45% less gas consumption, equivalent to savings of more than 2 million pesos
  • Elimination of white paint, saving approximately 150,000 pesos in materials and labor
  • Temperature difference of up to 3 °C between inside and outside in summer, improving the greenhouse climate
  • Better climate for both crops and staff
  • During the coldest winter nights (1°C outside), a stable temperature Delta was maintained, achieving the 12°C setpoint inside the greenhouse without overloading the heating system.
“With the screen I have flexibility, if I want light, I open the screen, if I don’t want light, I close it. You don’t get that duality with paint. In the end, it all comes down to light, that’s what makes the plant work.” — Felipe Palomares

When talking about Svensson, Felipe highlights that, more than the technology, the ongoing support from the Svensson team has been key since the installation of the screen.

“The follow-up from Svensson has been excellent. I haven’t had any issues, they’re always available to answer questions about management, maintenance, or installation. If there’s something they don’t have on hand, they research it and share it. That gives you confidence as a grower because you know you’re not alone.” — Felipe Palomares

After his experience with the screen Harmony 2845, Felipe shares this advice with other growers looking to improve their climate and reduce costs:

"I’d say that with the screen, you always win. If your focus is on energy, you’ll save costs. If it’s on shading, you can decide how much light to let in. And if you go for dual use, you get both advantages. You just have to learn how to manage it — but it’s worth it," says Felipe.

Continuous optimization in every cycle

With 10 hectares currently in operation and the goal of reaching 20 hectares of high-tech production, JD Agro continues to invest in innovation to guarantee export-quality tomatoes of the highest standard.

"I think in this cycle we’re going to see the full potential of the screen. In the end, what you aim for is to produce better and more efficiently. With Svensson, we’ve found a true ally to achieve that," Felipe commented.

At Svensson, we would like to thank Felipe Palomares and the entire JD Agro team for their trust in our solutions and for opening the doors of their greenhouse in Aguascalientes to share their experience.

We look forward to continuing to work together, driving new solutions that strengthen tomato production in the region.
