When Rong Rong Farm installed Svensson’s Xsect insect nets in Phase I, General Manager Han Mingjun was truly impressed by how effectively they controlled thrips. The experience showed him just how much the right upgrades and equipment can help a farm reach its full potential. So, when planning Phase II, he turned once again to Svensson for support. Along with continuing to use Xsect, the new greenhouse was equipped with climate screens to create an even better environment for healthy, productive crops.

Raising night temperatures to extend the harvest

To grow peppers through the winter in the new greenhouse, Han Mingjun first had to tackle the challenge of low night temperatures in unheated plastic structures. Without any screens, when outdoor temperatures dropped to 0°C at night, the inside of the greenhouse stayed only slightly warmer, around 3 to 4°C, far below the ideal conditions peppers need to thrive. This meant that even starting the growing season early did not guarantee an earlier harvest.

After learning about the energy-saving benefits of Svensson’s different screen options, Han decided to compare two solutions in the new greenhouses. By analyzing climate data during the coldest months from December to February in Yuxi, he found that the greenhouse with double screens stayed about 2°C warmer than the one with a single screen. Even more importantly, both greenhouses with screens saw a significant improvement in night temperatures compared to those without any protection.

In the end, the energy screens made it possible to extend the pepper harvest well into the winter months. The extra yields quickly paid back the investment, proving just how valuable the right climate solution can be.

Better screen efficiency starts with the right shading value

Beyond energy savings, Rong Rong Farm also carefully considered the need for proper shading throughout the entire crop cycle. In the past, the shading value of screens was chosen based only on the strongest light levels of the season, which limited how practical they were for year-round use.

Even during the winter months in Yuxi, these screens help protect young plants by providing gentle shading and maintaining humidity. When combined with fogging and ventilation for cooling, the screens prevent crop stress and maintain high quality even during the hottest part of the year.

Optimizing cultivation through data insights

For Han Mingjun, making the right decisions for continuous improvement in cultivation begins with data. By working closely with crop advisors and Svensson’s climate consultants, he adopted a crop-focused approach guided by detailed analysis of greenhouse climate, irrigation, and pest control.

Han shared that the experience gained from the new greenhouse has helped him better define what is needed for future projects. With these insights, he is confident that the next greenhouse will provide an even better climate for his crops.
