Greenhouse screen replacement: When to replace, what changes over time, and how to plan ahead

Greenhouse screens play a critical role in managing light, temperature, humidity, and energy use. While they are built to last, their performance does not remain constant forever. Screens age gradually, and as they do, the greenhouse climate becomes harder to control with the same precision.

Kwekerij van Winden invest in energy saving climate control

In August 2025, an important step was taken. In one of the greenhouses, the existing shading screen was replaced with a blackout screen (Obscura), and an additional energy screen (Luxous Light) was installed on the same wire bed. Combined with the existing PARperfect screen at the lower level, the greenhouse now has climate screens that deliver significant energy savings both at night and during the day. “That’s a major leap in insulation,” says Jeroen.

More efficient screening with Svensson Energy Monitor

Energy consumption has been a top priority in greenhouse horticulture for years. Growers are looking for ways to reduce their consumption without compromising crop quality. But how do you know if you're getting the most out of it? And how much difference does that single screen moment really make? Svensson developed the Energy Monitor: a practical software tool that gives growers insight into the effect of their screen strategy on energy consumption in the greenhouse. "It helps growers understand: where am I wasting energy and where is there room for improvement?" says Svensson climate expert Paul Arkesteijn.
