Flor y Miel, located in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico, is a greenhouse company with the capacity to produce up to 140,000 orchids and anthuriums each year. By installing Svensson climate screens, the company has significantly improved greenhouse climate conditions and plant quality.
Experience rooted in horticulture
We spoke with Fernando Aguerrebere, owner of Flor y Miel and a horticultural professional with more than 30 years of industry experience, and Moisés Rosas Zamora, the grower responsible for orchids, anthuriums, peace lilies, and other ornamental crops.
When the project first began, Flor y Miel relied on traditional black shade mesh for shading. Over time, the team recognized the limitations of this approach.
“As we learned more about how greenhouses are managed in the Netherlands, we realized the importance of retractable screens and the positive impact they have on light management,” Fernando explains.

The first step was to install a black-and-white Svensson climate screen in the anthurium production area, where positive results were observed almost immediately. Following a later expansion, Flor y Miel decided to install a double-screen system. The first screen was a Luxous 1547 D FR for energy savings, while the second screen was a Harmony screen with 45 percent shading and diffused light for precise light control.
“The screen is very durable and easier to install because it is designed for this purpose. It also provides much better light distribution,” says Fernando.
Better climate inside the greenhouse
Despite the higher investment compared to black shade mesh, the decision to switch to Harmony screens was driven by one key factor: improved plant quality.
“Plant quality improved significantly. The light is used more efficiently because the screen is mobile, and the overall greenhouse climate is better,” Fernando explains.
Moisés adds that light distribution and humidity management were central to the screen selection.
“Our goal was to create the best possible climate for the plants by distributing light evenly and retaining humidity more effectively,” he says.

Improved relative humidity management inside the greenhouse reduced heat loss at night, leading to energy savings through lower heating demand.
Stronger plants and better market position
Since installing Svensson climate screens, Flor y Miel has strengthened its position in the orchid and anthurium market by differentiating itself through quality.
“Our products are now recognized for their quality,” Fernando says.
Notable improvements in plant growth and structure include:
increased number and thickness of flower stems
stronger root development
improved flower color
increased number of flowers per stem
“I haven’t seen another screen that compares to Svensson’s in terms of quality and technical support. It’s a strong company, and I’m very satisfied,” says Moisés.
Fernando concludes with a guiding principle of the business:
“In flowers and horticulture, quality is what sells.”
Curious what made it all work?
