The importance and benefits of vertical airflow in greenhouses

Monitoring the air surrounding crops is just as crucial as monitoring greenhouse watering practices. Despite its importance in ensuring crop consistency and healthy growth, vertical airflow is often overlooked. It gives growers greater control over greenhouse temperature and air movement, helping eliminate stagnant air, cold spots and hot zones that can harm crops.

Greenhouse equipment such as high-pressure sodium lights is essential to operations but can contribute to undesirable heat accumulation. Growers cannot simply power down this equipment without affecting production. Excess heat, rising energy costs and limitations in growing practices such as screen gapping can create avoidable climate challenges.

To manage these effects, proper ventilation and air circulation systems are critical. Efficient air movement helps regulate temperature, control humidity levels and maintain a healthy growing environment where crops can thrive.

Vertical airflow is a modern technique in greenhouse climate control that allows growers to fine-tune their environment. By distributing air vertically throughout the canopy, it reduces stratification and creates a more uniform microclimate. Improved climate uniformity supports better crop quality, stronger plant health and increased yields.

Marjoland in the Netherlands

The transition from SON-T to LED lighting provides significant savings on energy costs for many horticultural companies, but also leads to new challenges. After all, the climate in the greenhouse changes under full LED, as is the case at rose nursery Marjoland. A Luxous 1147 FR energy screen, vertical fans from ClimaFlow and an extra growth tube at the top of the greenhouse are used to better manage the radiation, moisture balance and heat distribution.
