At the Van Uytsel garden centre in Kontich, Belgium, a striking climate screen installation has been completed featuring a large number of rolling Harmony climate screens. With 96 roll screens across 124 metres of greenhouse ridge, this project stands out not only for its scale but also for its impact on climate control and energy performance.
Van Uytsel expanded its garden centre in spring 2021. For the new greenhouse section, Batist Kassenbouw acted as subcontractor, designing a taller greenhouse equipped with roll screens instead of the dark fixed panels used in the older section. The roll screens allow better control of incoming light, which in turn enables finer control of the internal climate.
Installation was carried out by Holland Scherming, a partner with long experience installing Harmony screens in garden centres across Europe. According to installer Peter Rense, the results were impressive. In addition to providing improved climate control across different zones of the garden centre, the Harmony screens give the interior an industrial yet atmospheric look that complements the structure’s height and framing.

The greenhouse’s high ridge creates a spacious feel, and the screens play a key role in regulating light levels for an optimal environment for both plants and customers. During colder months, the screens help retain significant amounts of heat, contributing to energy savings. For optimal air exchange, the screens installed in the ventilation windows use an open structure to maintain airflow while controlling light and temperature.
The installation took about six weeks. Using an elevated work platform in the sandy soil, the Holland Scherming team was able to install the screens efficiently. This is not the first garden centre project they’ve completed — roll screens have also been installed in many Intratuin locations and other garden centres throughout Europe, from Scandinavia to southern France.
Special attention was paid to finishing details. As installer Peter explained, the complete roll screen system was finished with custom steelwork tailored to the greenhouse’s steel structure so that the motors and mechanisms are neatly concealed behind steel plates. This attention to detail sets a new standard for roll screen installations in horticultural retail environments.
