In connection with the launch of Svensson Markspelle’s new website, we announced a design competition in partnership with the furniture company Källemo. The first prize was a Matti Klenell Spectra chair, and competition entrants were able to choose from Svensson Markspelle’s range of upholstery fabrics to create a unique – and potentially prize-winning – design.
The jury, consisting of Erik Lundh, President of Källemo, Anne Ludvigson, President of Ludvig Svensson, and Lars Kjelin, Design Manager at Svensson Markspelle, has now made its decision. The winner was Berit Sys, whose fresh, spring-like design combined muted tones with bright colours:
- The winning entry made excellent use of the full breadth of Svensson Markspelle’s collection, combining a variety of finishes, patterns and expressions," explains Lars Kjelin. Using the patterned, almost three-dimensional fabric Ink for the main body of the chair was a bold choice which took full advantage of the fabric’s potential. This gave the chair a smart, well-dressed look, conjuring up thoughts of a tailor’s workshop."
- I’m extremely proud to have won a fantastic Spectra chair, which I look forward to snuggling up in with my three-year-old son," says Berit. I’m particularly looking forward to enjoying the fantastic, fresh colours every day that I chose to cover the chair in. And I’m sure that I’ll have a classic piece of Scandinavian furniture with hardwearing fabrics for many years to come.
Architect and installation artist Berit Sys lives and works in Hellerup, Copenhagen. Since graduating from Aarhus School of Architecture in 1995, she and partner Gustav Fabricius have worked as GYS ARK with space and light installations and architecture.
- The process of understanding how space and light affect our feelings and mood is complicated, she continues. As designers, we are content when we succeed in bringing together light and materials to create special sensory moments. It doesn’t matter whether we’re dealing with architecture or design. Ultimately, it’s all about bringing to life the materials and spaces with which we surround ourselves.
Curious to see more of the competition entries? We will present a selection of five submissions which deserved an honourable mention at www.svenssonmarkspelle.com. These entrants will receive cushions in their chosen fabrics.
