An optimized climate in a transparent manner

Wholesum Harvest is one of North America's fastest growing organic producers with greenhouse operations in the US and Mexico. Following the build of high-tech greenhouses in Sonora, Mexico, the Crisantes family opened a US operation with modern greenhouses in southern Arizona.

Theojary Crisantes, son of founder Miguel Crisantes defines the companies organic production as, "A way of farming with common sense, with a deep sense of understanding for the environment, with a feeling of love towards the land, and with resourcefulness in cultivation, rather than abusing Mother Nature with agrochemicals."

The project which began in 2011 with an initial area of 5 hectares, has since expanded to include a total of 25 hectares of vegetable production. The greenhouse was built with highly transparent glass to optimize light capture throughout the year, which is especially important during winter months as the greenhouse is located between two hills to the east and west, making the days even shorter.

Our strategy to save energy during the winter consists of removing the screen in the morning when we see the first rays of sun fall on the crop; in the afternoon, the crop is covered again when the sun disappears over the hill in order to retain the heat captured throughout day. "It's amazing to consider that without the screen we would spend part of our profit on efficently trying to heat the greenhouse."

"The screen is an excellent way to conserve humidity inside the greenhouse; it helps us to keep our plants healthy without reaching a level of over-stress due to excess perspiration."

"We also use our Luxous 1347 FR screen during the warmer months when radiation directly falls on our crop by covering the range at peak times, usually from 12 pm to 4pm, to reduce excess light intensity"
