Canada’s largest independent greenhouse produce grower and the United States’ largest greenhouse pepper grower Nature Fresh™ Farms has begun debuting their mobile “Greenhouse Education Centre (GEC)” to retailers, schools, and at consumer events throughout North America.
The custom-built-38-foot-long mobile micro-greenhouse was designed to raise awareness and educate consumers of all ages, especially youth, on where and how their produce is grown. The GEC will be on tour throughout the summer and into late fall to not only educate consumers but to help them make more health conscious choices moving forward.
Designed & built by Nature Fresh™ Farms sister company & greenhouse builder South Essex Fabricating the GEC consists of six custom designed growing cassettes which hold a variety of mature, live fruit bearing plants, including bell peppers of three different colors, English cucumbers, cocktail tomatoes, and cherry tomatoes.
Positioned as a living greenhouse on wheels, the Greenhouse Education Center is equipped with 11 components commonly found in state-of-the-art vegetable greenhouses, like that of Nature Fresh’s high-tech greenhouse facility in Ontario. Svensson climate screens are among the components resembling what a greenhouse would be built with. LUXOUS screens are installed in the mini greenhouse for maximum energy savings.
Installed in both the mobile GEC and at Nature Fresh’s 52 Ha Leamington, Ontario operation Svensson energy screens keep warm air inside the greenhouse during cool nights and shade plants from intense sunlight. The use of screens significantly contributes to Nature Fresh Farms 40% overall reduction in energy use over the past 10 years.
Nature Fresh Farms ships greenhouse grown produce year round to key retailers throughout North America from their Canadian operation. A 70 Ha facility is currently under way in Delta, Ohio, which will allow Nature Fresh to produce tens of thousands additional cases of fresh greenhouse grown vegetables beginning later this year. South Essex Fabricating specializes in building commercial greenhouse structures, having built over 600 Ha’s throughout the North American market. Both businesses are family owned and managed by the Quirring family.
